2003 Game Summary

April 12, 2003 - D.C. Divas @ Erie

On April 12th, the D.C. Divas started their third season with an overwhelming win over a first-year team, the Erie Illusion. The D.C. Divas traveled to Erie to give the fledgling team an inaugural game much like their own 2 years ago--a mind-blowing shutout, which in this case was to the tune of 50-0. The D.C. Divas were in command the entire game - the offense rushed for 380 yards while Erie's rushing game gained only 15 yards.

D.C. Divas Offensive
Game 1, Defensive MVP,
Lisa "Speedy" Gonzalez

The D.C. Divas didn’t score until the second quarter. Just 2 minutes and 3 seconds into the second quarter, outside linebacker Lisa “Speedy” Gonzalez sacked quarterback Julie Kemling in the end zone for a safety. The D.C. Divas were winning by a score of 2-0. But once on the board, their game was unrelenting. Wide receiver Tara Kallal scored the game’s next 2 touchdowns. With less than 5 minutes left in the second quarter, Kallal completed a 14-yard run for a touchdown, breaking tackles twice before hitting the end zone. Then at the 1:57 mark, Kallal went on to catch a 58-yard pass from quarterback Allyson Hamlin for her second addition to the D.C. Divas’ mighty score. Since the team successfully made 2-point runs for each touchdown, the D.C. Divas went to the half with a score of 18-0.

D.C. Divas Offensive
Game 1, Offensive MVP,
Donna Wilkinson

In the third quarter the D.C. Divas scored another two touchdowns. With just 4 minutes left in the quarter, fullback LaShawn Foust scored on the end of a 64-yard rushing drive. Running back Donna Wilkinson, the offensive MVP of the game, ran 30 yards for another D.C. Divas' touchdown and completed the 2-point conversion.

The D.C. Divas remained strong in the 4th quarter by adding three more touchdowns to the scoreboard. Lisa Gonzales, the Defensive MVP, returned an interception for 13 yards. Wide receiver Vickie Lucas grabbed a 25-yard touchdown pass, and running back Adrienne Lewis offered a 27-yard scoring run.

The D.C. Divas' defense also had a great game. As a whole the D.C. Divas' defense was a quarterback’s nightmare - 2 forced fumbles, 2 interceptions, 2 sacks, and 5 hurries. Following this first show of the team’s strength and skill, the team now looks ahead to its first home game against their rival the Baltimore Burn on April 19th at Eastern High School at 7 pm.
