2003 Game Summary May 3, 2003 - D.C. Divas vs. Pittsburgh D.C. Divas are Passionate In the D.C. Divas’ second home game on May 3rd, they met the first-year team Pittsburgh Passion This game proved it took more than winning the coin toss to beat the D.C. Divas on the field. The first half was a difficult one for the D.C. Divas. But after the halftime break their game was red hot with a 30-point second half. Early in the first quarter the D.C. Divas moved the ball well on the ground but were unable to reach the end zone. A fourth down-and-goal situation late in the 1st quarter looked grim when the D.C. Divas went for it and turned the ball over on the one-yard line. But inside linebacker Tessa Nelson got the D.C. Divas on the board with a 2-point safety by sacking the Passion’s quarterback in the end zone.
In the second quarter the D.C. Divas moved the ball on the ground and in the air but did not score. The third quarter saw the D.C. Divas’ first touchdown when wide receiver Tara Kallal ran 36 yards to the end zone. A successful 2-point conversion by running back Donna Wilkinson made the score 10-0. To the D.C. Divas’ disappointment, the Passion was able to get on the board in the third quarter with a breakaway run to the goal. Although cornerback Lisa Hill was able to bring her down, it was too late, and the score was 10-7. With 3:29 left in the quarter, the D.C. Divas put some more points between them and the Passion with a Wilkinson carry for a touchdown. Wilkinson also handled the 2-point conversion, and the D.C. Divas started the fourth quarter with a score of 18-7.
The D.C. Divas’ offense was on a roll for the fourth quarter. At the 11:25 mark quarterback Allyson Hamlin threw to wide receiver Nikki Williams for a touchdown. Wide receiver Vickie Lucas made the 2-point conversion to bring the score up to 26-7. With an interception by cornerback Angela Head, the D.C. Divas regained possession quickly with 11:02 left in the quarter, but the team didn’t make it to the end zone. The rest of the quarter saw some heavy hitting by offensive lineman Michelle Riddle and inside linebacker Tessa Nelson. With less than 3:00 left in the game, Kallal made the final touchdown of the evening when she grabbed a long pass from Hamlin. The final score was 32-7. The D.C. Divas’ numbers back up their score - 103 passing yards and 360 rushing yards, compared to the Passions 36 passing yards and 72 rushing yards. The offensive MVP was quarterback Allyson Hamlin while the MVP for the defense was inside linebacker Tessa Nelson. The National Women's Football Association has 29 teams playing in 5 divisions.
