2003 Game Summary

May 31, 2003 - D.C. Divas @ Pittsburgh

Donna WilkinsonWhen the Pittsburgh Passion scored with less than 4 minutes left in the game and the D.C. Divas were trailing 22-25, it looked like the D.C. Divas were going to rack up their first loss of the season on May 31st. But the D.C. Divas have what it takes to make the plays even with the extra pressure of coming from behind with so little time left. The D.C. Divas were quick getting the plays off on their next possession. Fullback LaShawn Foust and running back Donna Wilkinson marched the ball up the field. The D.C. Divas’ win seemed certain when quarterback Allyson Hamlin ran in a touchdown with 46 seconds left in the game, but a penalty for aiding the runner brought the touchdown back to the 5-yard line. However, the D.C. Divas would not be stopped. Wilkinson scored with 26 seconds left and completed the 2-point conversion to make the final score 30-25 and to continue the D.C. Divas winning streak, which is now 6-0.

Allyson HamlinThis game at Pittsburgh was a tough one for the D.C. Divas. After 5 games where they were behind only once, the D.C. Divas played this game with the Passion on top 4 times. The D.C. Divas first saw the end zone when wide receiver Tara Kallal scored with a little over 10 minutes left in the first quarter. A flag on that play got the touchdown called back, and the D.C. Divas ended up punting on the 4th down. The Passion was able to get within field goal range on their next possession. The kick was good, and the Passion led with a score of 3-0.

Early in the second quarter Wilkinson ran the ball into the end zone after a running drive by herself and Foust. After Wilkinson completed the 2-point conversion, this made the score 8-3 in favor of the D.C. Divas. After several unsuccessful drives, a pass by quarterback Allyson Hamlin was intercepted with less than 2 minutes left in the half. The D.C. Divas regained possession through a Passion fumble shortly after, but time would run out for them in the first half.

Play began in the 3rd quarter with Pittsburgh receiving, and they were able to score at the 11:51 mark. With a successful conversion, the Passion would lead for the second time of the evening, with a score of 10-8. Later in the 3rd quarter at 3rd down and 14, the D.C. Divas were able to get the first down with a carry by Foust. Foust would score later in that drive with a 4-yard carry. With a successful 2-point conversion by Wilkinson, the D.C. Divas would be in familiar territory once again—leading 16-10.

The Passion started the 4th quarter much like they did the 3rd with a 15-yard touchdown throw. After faking an extra point but scoring a 2-point conversion, the score was once again in their favor at 18-16. Wilkinson was able to score at the 6:30 mark to make the score 22-18. But the Passion did not give up, and they scored again to bring the board to 25-22. With the touchdown that was called back and the final touchdown of the game, the D.C. Divas proved their ability to focus and come out on top even when they’ve played a hard game and have to come from behind.

The D.C. Divas are at home at Eastern High School to play the Columbus Flames at 7:05 on June 7th.
