2003 Game Summary June 14, 2003 - D.C. Divas @ Baltimore Although the D.C. Divas had already ensured their playoff berth and enter the post season as the Division Champions, they suffered a tough loss - their only loss - when they traveled to face the Baltimore Burn for their last regular season game on June 14. So while Saturday’s game was a disappointing loss, the D.C. Divas can still look forward to their first playoff game against the Connecticut Crush on June 28th in Washington, DC. The game began with a scoreless first quarter. The D.C. Divas gained some ground but were unable to reach the end zone. Less than a minute into the second quarter, the D.C. Divas were able to score as running back Donna Wilkinson was able to score after a quick drive down the field. The D.C. Divas were unable to make the conversion but led the game with a score of 6-0. The teams continued their battle throughout the second quarter until just about a minute before the half. Baltimore was able to complete a touchdown pass to make the score 6-6. The D.C. Divas blocked the Burn’s extra-point attempt, and the teams went into the half with a tied score. The struggle continued in the third quarter until the 3:13 mark when fullback LaShawn Foust scored after several carries. Wilkinson made the conversion, and the D.C. Divas were ahead 14-6. But the fourth quarter was less than 5 minutes old when the Burn were able to score with a touchdown pass. A successful conversion made the score a tense 14-14. The D.C. Divas experienced a heart-breaking turnover on their next possession. The Burn was able to recover a fumble at the 5:55 mark. It was on this possession that Baltimore was able to score with just 1:23 left in the game. They were able to make the conversion to make the score 14-22. After a long season and their fourth game in as many weeks, the D.C. Divas finally gave up a game to the competition, but they remain the Division Champions. Much like a high school senior who knows she’s gotten into Harvard, but didn’t get all A’s; the D.C. Divas took the loss in stride. The D.C. Divas will enjoy an off-weekend with two weeks to relax and practice before their first big playoff game. The National Women's Football Association has 29 teams playing in 5 divisions.
