2003 Game Summary Play-off Round Two - July 12, 2003 - D.C. Divas @ Philadelphia After a lightning storm delay at the Wissahakon High School in Ambler, PA, the D.C. Divas and the Philadelphia Phoenix took the field on July 12 to see who would move on to the semifinal round of the playoffs. After a phenomenal game that left the D.C. Divas’ coaches awed, the D.C. Divas’ playoff dreams ended with a heartbreaking interception when victory was just one touchdown away. Both teams were revved for the game and quickly scored two touchdowns in the first quarter to make the score tied at 16-16. At the beginning of the second quarter, the D.C. Divas were close to a first down when a fumble forced a turnover. The Phoenix took the lead 24-16. On their next possession, The D.C. Divas marched down the field with a 35-yard punt return by cornerback Ivy Tillman and carries by fullback LaShawn Foust, wide receiver Vickie Lucas, and running back Donna Wilkinson. However, a 15-yard penalty moved them back. With 3rd down and 18 yards to go, it looked grim. But Quarterback Allyson Hamlin fired off a long pass to wide receiver Nikki Williams. In spite of the ball being bobbled by the Phoenix defense, Williams somehow made the catch for a 17-yard gain. Ultimately the D.C. Divas had to turn the ball over after an unsuccessful 4th-down conversion. The Phoenix increased their lead to 30-16 with another touchdown in the 3rd quarter, but the D.C. Divas did not give up. In the 4th quarter after carries by Wilkinson and Foust, quarterback Hamlin found running back Tarlesha Wayne for a touchdown. With a successful conversion by Wilkinson, the D.C. Divas were one slim touchdown behind with a score of 24-30. But the 6-point deficit was short-lived as the Phoenix had a breakaway run for a touchdown to make the score 36-24. The D.C. Divas kept their focus and scored again. A throw by quarterback Hamlin to wide receiver Stacy Palmer at the 8:56 mark made the score a close 32-36. The D.C. Divas’ defensive line held the Phoenix back on their next possession to enable the offense to try to come from behind. Hopes were high as the D.C. Divas took possession once again. But the Phoenix managed an interception with just two minutes left in the game. As the clock wound down, the curtain went down on a stellar D.C. Divas’ season with a Division Championship and two great playoff performances under their belts. Way to go, D.C. Divas! The National Women's Football Association has 29 teams playing in 5 divisions.
