2004 Game Summary April 3, 2004 - D.C. Divas @ Roanoke The D.C. Divas welcomed another new team to the league when they hosted the Roanoke Revenge for a 70-0 trouncing on April 3rd - their first game of the season. The D.C. Divas kicked off to a hopeful Roanoke team at 6 PM, but the Revenge gained little before they had to punt. The Revenge kicker dropped the ball, and the D.C. Divas swarmed to take possession deep in Revenge territory. Running back Donna Wilkinson took advantage and scored on this possession. She completed the two-point conversion for an 8-0 lead. On the Revenge’s next possession, they were able to get a first down but weren’t able to move the ball down the field. On their punt to the D.C. Divas, the Revenge fell on the ball after a D.C. Divas' player touched it. But they were unable to take advantage of this possession, and a touchdown eluded them once again. On their next possession, the D.C. Divas’ defensive back Raynette Savoy had a long punt return. A pass to wide receiver Nikki Williams led to a touchdown, but a flag on the play called it back. The D.C. Divas kept the pressure on with a long run from Wilkinson, which required two Revenge players to bring her down. Quarterback Allyson Hamlin fired a pass to wide receiver Tara Kallal, who had a long run for another touchdown at the end of the first quarter. Wilkinson provided the two-point conversion to make the score 16-0. The D.C. Divas didn’t slow down in the 2nd quarter by scoring quickly off a Hamlin pass to wide receiver Vickie Lucas. Wilkinson again provided the extra two points to bring the score up to 24-0. The Revenge continued to try to move the ball but could not make anything happen. Since the D.C. Divas are not a team to rest on their laurels, they kept the pressure on. Wide receiver Lilah Blackstone returned the next kickoff for a touchdown with defensive back Kathryn Hemlock blocking. Kallal provided the two-point conversion for a score of 32-0. Again the D.C. Divas flexed their muscles on their next possession with a long run from Williams, which set up the touchdown pass from Hamlin to Kallal. Another flag brought that score back. As the 3rd quarter got underway, Wilkinson stepped up again for a score at the 11:00-minute mark. The two-point conversion brought the score to 40-0. About 5 minutes later a touchdown pass to Williams, with Kallal providing the two point conversion, made the score 48-0. With 3:46 left in the quarter, the Revenge’s possession was cut short by an interception by defensive back Alison Fischer. The D.C. Divas once again turned this opportunity to gold with another touchdown. The conversion brought the score to 56-0, for the first score of the 4th quarter. The D.C. Divas continued their reign with two more touchdowns before the final gun. With just 3 minutes left in the game, running back Adrienne Lewis caught a touchdown pass and running back Stacey Michael ran in another to make the final score 70-0. On April 12th, the D.C. Divas started their third season with an overwhelming win over a first-year team, the Erie Illusion. The D.C. Divas traveled to Erie to give the fledgling team an inaugural game much like their own 2 years ago--a mind-blowing shutout, which in this case was to the tune of 50-0. The D.C. Divas were in command the entire game - the offense rushed for 380 yards while Erie's rushing game gained only 15 yards. |
