D.C. Divas vs Philadelphia Firebirds

D.C. DIVAS WIN 42-0 OVER PHILADELPHIA
May 30, 2009

The Divas third trip to Philadelphia in team history ended with a convincing win over the Firebirds. The Divas first trip in 2001 ended with the worst loss in team history. The 2003 trip saw one of the greatest playoff games in women's football history end in a 36-32 thriller that ended the Divas season. This time the Divas put 35 points up in the first half to put the game away early.

Defensive Back Kathryn Hemlock picked off a pass on the Firebirds first possession and Wide Receiver Tara Stephenson added a 19 yard rushing TD to put the Divas up 7-0. Hemlock had a perfect night with 6 extra points kicked and she also added two interceptions.

Running Back Okiima Pickett continued her strong rushing efforts with a 10 yard scamper to give the Divas a 14-0 lead. The Divas third possession saw Quarterback Allyson Hamlin connect twice with Wide Receiver Nikki Williams, including for a 9-yard touchdown, and the Divas were up 21-0 to end the first quarter.

Hamlin then began the first drive of the second quarter by finding Wide Receiver Tara Stephenson for a 16 yard strike to make it 28-0. Defensive End Sharina Western recovered a fumble on the ensuing possession and Running Back Okiima Pickett did the rest. Her 4 carries for 37 yards on the drive ended with a 13 yard Touchdown behind a great effort by the offensive line. The score made it to 35-0 but Pickett wasn't done. She had a career-best 234 yards on the ground and capped the night with a 29 yard run to give the Divas a victory.

Head Coach Keith Howard remarked "I'm proud of the way we competed and it was good to get the win. We have to work on getting less penalties and keeping our focus on our next opponent."

The Divas are now 6-0 on the year and return home to face the N.Y. Sharks on June 6th with a 7:00pm kickoff. The Divas are currently ranked number 1 in the Massey ratings which determine the playoff seeds and home field advantage.
