D.C. DIVAS MAINTAIN DIVISION LEAD WITH 49-3 WIN
Divas vs Philadelphia Firebirds 05/29/10

The D.C. Divas posted a 35-point first quarter which is the most in franchise history and did so with only 5 offensive snaps. That proved too much and led to a 49-3 trouncing of the visiting Philadelphia Firebirds.

The opening kickoff was returned by Kathryn Hemlock for a darting 86-yard score. Hemlock added the extra point and the lead was 7-0. The Divas first offensive series lasted only 3 plays when RB Tiffany Matthews raced 26 yards to make it 14-0 Divas. After a muffed punt attempt by Philadelphia, the Divas recovered on the one-yard-line and RB LaShawn Foust pounded it in to make it 21-0. The Divas defense held on the ensuing possession and then WR Tara Stephenson took the Firebirds punt and exhilarated the crowd with a daring yet patient jaunt that made excellent use of her blockers for a 28-0 lead.

Stephenson continues to remind Divas fans why she was named the Offensive and Special Teams MVP in 2009. Her 16-yard-run on the Divas’ next drive cemented the record-breaking opening quarter and gave the Divas a 35-0 lead. In the second quarter, Stephenson again showed why she is one of the most feared returners to ever play when she broke another punt return for 70 yards and the touchdown that would make it 41-0 Divas at the half. The extra point failure was
about the only thing that didn’t work for the Divas as they closed out their regular season home schedule. Stephenson amassed 145 yards in her 3 punt returns.

“Sometimes things seem like they are happening in slow motion,” said Stephenson. “I had excellent blocking and was able to use my speed and vision to make it work.”

RB Reneka Watkins added 7 carries for 23 yards and a touchdown in the second half and the two point conversion to make the victory complete.

The Divas head to Boston next week to take on the Militia in what is sure to be another classic matchup. If the Divas win, they would clinch the 7th division title in the last 8 years of play and host a first-round playoff game on Saturday June 12th against the Atlanta Xplosion.
