D.C. Divas vs Boston Militia

Militia Proves Too Much for Divas in Offensive Shootout D.C. Falls to Boston 42-35 in Rematch of 2009 Eastern Conference Championship Game May 1, 2010

(Landover, MD) – It took one long offseason and four games for the event known simply as “the rematch” in IWFL (Independent Women’s Football League) circles to take place. On Saturday night, the Boston Militia’s opportunity to avenge their stinging defeat at the hands of the D.C. Divas in the 2009 IWFL Eastern Conference Championship game arrived – and Boston took full advantage of it, handing the Divas a 42-35 loss on a warm night outside the nation’s capital.

For the Divas offense, it was a game marked by familiar names delivering big plays – particularly through the air. The team’s first and last possessions ended in touchdown strikes from Divas QB Kathryn Hemlock (#10) to club veterans TE/WR Donna Wilkinson (#33) and WR Tara Stephenson (#85) respectively. Between the two of them, Wilkinson and Stephenson would finish the game with four receptions into the end zone. The most electrifying of the bunch came midway through the 2nd quarter when Stephenson pulled in a short screen pass, eluded would-be Militia tacklers, and turned on the afterburners for a 59-yard scamper that found pay dirt.

On the ground, the Divas found success through the contrasting running styles of RB’s Okiima Pickett (#7), Kenyetta Grigsby (#29) and Tiffany Matthews (#34). Matthews in particular punished the Boston defense with a number of big, bruising carries. She also picked up the Divas other touchdown on a run that capped the team’s first possession of the 2nd half and tied the game at that point 21-all.

While the Divas were able to gobble up yards and light up the scoreboard, the Militia did more of both. Most of Boston’s success on offense came courtesy of a physical running game that kept the Divas defense on their heels much of the night and proved to be more than the unit could handle.

“Offensively, we did a lot better job than we did in New York (in the team’s 4/17 loss to the Sharks),” said Stephenson following the game. “To come out here and put up 35 points against Boston is really phenomenal. But we’ve got a lot of things that we need to work on. And we’re going to go back and practice on those.”

The Divas, now 2-2 on the season, will get a chance to see if their practice pays off next Saturday in a road contest against the Baltimore Nighthawks. Baltimore will be looking for some payback of their own, with the Divas handing the squad from Charm City a 54-6 thumping in last month’s season opener.
