Jordyn White, DE: Bringing Motivation and Harmony to the 2010 D.C. Divas

It seems the word “quit” never made it into D.C Divas defensive end Jordyn White’s vocabulary. All of her life, White has had to overcome challenges – that includes her time on the football field. After a gruesome ACL tear in (game or year she did it), all she could think about was how much she would miss playing football. But that mindset quickly changed.

“The harder I worked, the less time I'd have to spend away from the field,” said White. “I postponed the surgery, rehabbed extensively, and with the help of a very strong brace, was back on the field before the end of the season.”

It’s with this dedication, determination, and drive that Jordyn White (or as her teammates call her, “J-dub”) has assumed a leadership role with the D.C. Divas, and made a big impact in the process.

With an extensive football resume, “J-dub” is one of the players who brings true veteran leadership to this year’s squad. Before joining the Divas in 2007, she played three years for Philadelphia and was ready for a change. “I'd already considered moving to D.C. for career reasons, so the Divas turned out to be just the motivation I needed,” added White. Now it’s White who’s helping supply motivation to the Divas through her enthusiasm for the game. With the Divas completing another winning regular season in 2010 and in the race for a championship, White’s ability to motivate has proven to be a key ingredient in the team’s success.

When it comes to comparing her daily life with being a member of the Divas, Jordyn White is a bit of a paradox. A Statistician at the Census Bureau during the day, she transforms into a D.C. Diva at practices and on gamedays. It’s a transformation family and friends still have a hard time understanding. According to White, “Most of my coworkers are intrigued; they can't fathom how their skirt and pumps-clad coworker could play defensive end without smearing her eyeliner.”

Football to White is more than just a game, it’s one of her many passions along with cooking, writing and singing. And speaking of singing, you may even catch this south Jersey native belting out a familiar tune at a Divas game. Fans were treated to that very scene when “J-dub” sang the national anthem before the team’s home opener against Baltimore this season.

With the 2010 IWFL playoffs underway, only time will tell if the Divas can get back to the championship game again. Regardless, one thing’s for sure, with Jordyn White on their side, this year’s Divas will be adequately motivated and playing in harmony.
