D.C. Divas are Passionate

The DC Divas met the first-year Pittsburgh Passion at home on May 3rd and proved it took more than winning the coin toss to beat The D.C. Divas on the field. The first half was a difficult one for The D.C. Divas, but after the halftime break, their game was red hot with a 30-point second half.

The D.C. Divas moved the ball well on the ground in the early 1st quarter, but were unable to reach the end zone. A 4th down and goal situation late in the 1st quarter looked grim when The D.C. Divas went for it and turned the ball over on the one yard line, but inside linebacker Tessa Nelson got The D.C. Divas on the board with a 2-point safety.

In the 2nd quarter, The D.C. Divas moved the ball on the ground and in the air, but did not score. The 3rd quarter saw The D.C. Divas’ first touchdown, when wide receiver Tara Kallal ran 36 yards to the end zone; with a successful conversion by running back Donna Wilkinson, the score was 10-0.

To The D.C. Divas disappointment, the Passion was able to get on the board in the 3rd quarter with a breakaway run to the goal. While cornerback Lisa Hill was able to bring her down, it was too late, and the score was 10-7. Late in the quarter, Divas put some more points between them and the Passion, with a carry by Wilkinson for a touch down at 3:29. Wilkinson also handled the conversion, and The D.C. Divas started the 4th quarter with a score of 18-7.

The D.C. Divas offense was on a roll for the 4th quarter, with quarterback Allison Hamlin throwing to wide receiver Nikki Williams at 11:25 for a touchdown. Wide receiver Vickie Lucas made the conversion to bring the score to 26-7. The D.C. Divas regained possession quickly at 11:02, with an interception by outside linebacker Angela Head, but the team didn’t make the goal. The quarter saw some heavy hitting by offensive linebacker Michelle Riddle and inside linebacker Tessa Nelson, and the final touchdown of the evening was made by Kallal when she grabbed a long pass with less than three minutes left to make the final score 32-7.

The D.C. Divas numbers back up their score, with 103 passing yards and 360 rushing yards, compared to the Passions 36 yards passing and 72 yards rushing. The offensive MVP was Quarterback Allyson Hamlin and Inside Linebacker Tessa Nelson was the MVP for the defense. Following next week’s game at Columbus, and a Bye the following week, The D.C. Divas are next at home against the Erie Illusion on May 24 at 7:05.
