D.C. Divas Cause Columbus to Flame Out

The D.C. Divas scored first on a five-yard pass from QB Allyson Hamlin to WR Vickie Lucas and held on for an 8-7 win over the visiting Columbus Flames. The win takes the Divas to 7-0 on the year and earns them the Mid-Atlantic Division championship of the NWFA. Tight end and punter Stacy Palmer had one catch for 21 yards, but it was her foot not her hands that proved to be the difference. Her 49-yard punt pinned the Flames inside the 10-yard line with less than 2 minutes to play and earned her offensive MVP honors.

The defense led by Amy Juang's 8 tackles (3 for losses) was able to extinguish the Flames offensive attack on the final series. A reshuffled starting lineup featured Linebacker Debbie Frye who added 8 tackles to a defense that has given up a touchdown or less in 4 of their 7 wins.

The offensive attack once again featured the rushing trio of LaShawn Foust, Monica Livingston and Donna "the Animal" Wilkinson. They combined for 166 of the Divas 173 yards on the ground. Wilkinson now leads the NWFA with 917 yards rushing (74 on the night). Foust continues to pound the opponents for critical yards and added 52 while Monica Livingston brought speed and spirit with a 43 yard effort. Head Coach Ezra Cooper fresh off his second Gatorade bath praised his entire team, “I can't say enough about their effort. They work hard and it shows. We're one big happy family. We've stayed together all year and we will continue to do so.” “It feels awesome,” said Linebacker/corner "Poison Ivy" Tillman who was sporting a gash on her chin that will require stitches. "We are going to the championship and winning it....so will the Freedom and the Mystics, but we will bring the first one back to D.C." The Divas earned a bye in the first round of the play-offs, which begin June 28th. The championship game is in Nashville, TN on August 2nd.

The Divas play their final regular season game next Saturday night vs. their archrival the Baltimore Burn at Dundalk Community College. Game time is 7pm.

The Divas will be appearing at WASHINGTON WOMEN'S FOOTBALL WEEKEND June 8th, when they sign autographs and attend the Washington Freedom game at 4pm.

The D.C. Divas practice Tues-Wed and Thurs evening at Landover Rec Park (rte 50 and rte 202). For more information contact Rich Daniel at 301-573-4260 or go to www.dcdivas.com OR www.womensfootballcentral.com.
