YWCA Girls Sports EXPO to Give Area Girls a Day of Sports Clinics and Information About Sports Scholarships and Careers in Sports

YWCA Expo LogoWASHINGTON, D.C. – More than 2,500 girls, young women and their parents are expected to participate in the 1st Annual YWCA Girls Sports EXPO on Saturday April 17, 2004 at the Trinity Center for Women and Girls in Sports located in northeast Washington, D.C.

Olympic gold medal gymnast Dominique Dawes, best-selling author and sports columnist for USA Today Christine Brennan, and players from local professional and college teams will be featured. Participants can take part in sports clinics, watch athletic performances, learn about the history of women and girls in sports, and much more.

The EXPO is free and open to the public and will be held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The Trinity College campus is located at 125 Michigan Avenue, NE.

“The EXPO is a wonderful opportunity for girls and young women to learn about the many benefits of athletics and sports opportunities whether it is on the field, in the board room, or behind the camera,” said Orysia Stanchak, executive director of the YWCA of the National Capital Area, organizer of the event.

“ Parents can get information about involving or advancing their daughters in sports, buying the right equipment, and even about college scholarship opportunities for top-level players.”

Three-time Olympian Dawes, figure-skating expert and author Brennan, and other sports luminaries will conduct sessions and meet with participants to help them learn of the benefits and challenges of sports at every level -- from recreational enjoyment to post-college professional.

Clinics will be held on more than a dozen sports, including traditional team sports such as basketball, soccer and lacrosse. Individual sports such as tennis, golf, and swimming and extreme sports such as roller-blading and race car driving will also be featured.

Broadcasting, team coaching and athletic training are among the sports-related careers that will be featured in other sessions. Parents can learn about how to provide support and find opportunities for their daughters and about possibilities and the realities of obtaining athletic college scholarships.

Other features of the fun-filled day include:

  • Exciting exhibitions and performances in athletic endeavors ranging from gymnastics and “double Dutch” jump roping and cheer leading
  • Random drawings for fabulous prizes
  • Local sports celebrities signing autographs
  • Presentations of awards to local leaders and advocates for girls and women
  • Giveaways from EXPO sponsors
  • Diagnostic screenings to measure overall health and fitness

Registration information for the EXPO is available by phone at 202-626-0700, extension 22, and on the Internet at www.YWCAGirlsSportsEXPO.org. Those under age 18 must present an official permission form signed by a parent or guardian. The required form can be downloaded at www.YWCAGirlsSportsEXPO.org, and will also be available to accompanying parents or guardians at the EXPO sign-in desk. The day is designed for active involvement so participants should wear comfortable clothing and must wear athletic shoes to enter the gym. The event is accessible by Metro. Take Metro’s Red Line to Brookland-CUA and exit on 10th Street.

The 1st annual YWCA Girls Sports EXPO is a program of the YWCA of the National Capital Area. The organization’s mission is to empower women and their families from many different cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds with health and wellness, career training, childcare and youth programs that foster overall well-being, independence, and economic stability.
