Boston, MA – This was one of the biggest tests of the D.C. Divas’ season, and the burgundy and gold passed with flying colors.
On a cold night in Massachusetts, the D.C. Divas overcame a sluggish start and powered their way to a hard-fought, 22-12 win over the Massachusetts Mutiny. Four years ago, the Divas made their first trip to Boston and scored their first points in team history before losing to the Mutiny, 15-8. This was the Divas’ first meeting with the Mutiny since dropping two games to them in that inaugural 2001 season.
This game proved how far the Divas have come.
The Divas (4-0) had trouble getting started. The team got lost on the way to their hotel and then got lost again on their way to the field. So it was no surprise when the team seemed lost to start the game, and the Mutiny took advantage. On the first play of the game, the Mutiny (3-1) broke free for a 65-yard run for a touchdown, giving the home team a 6-0 lead.
The Divas’ offensive line decided to take matters into their own hands. With some talented running by LaShawn Foust, Monica Livingston, and Claudia Hogan, the Divas drove the ball 70 yards for their first score, a seven-yard touchdown by Foust. The Divas made the first of two two-point conversions to take an 8-6 lead.
From that point on, it was all Divas. Monica Livingston provided the second score on a four-yard run by diving into the end zone. The final touchdown for the D.C. Divas came late in the second quarter on a 19-yard run by Natalie Randolph, which gave the Divas a 22-6 advantage at halftime.
The game was marred by penalties. In all, DC had nine penalties for 90 yards. These stalled all four second-half drives, leaving them scoreless for the second half. The Mutiny used some nifty running plays to set up a fade pass for their final score. The Mutiny missed the extra point on a botched snap, eventually falling to defeat, 22-12.
The game was a terrific battle to watch and participate in. It is quite possible that D.C. will see the Mutiny again this season. If so, it promises to be another great contest.
