Baltimore, MD – The D.C. Divas finished off their second consecutive 8-0 regular season campaign by defeating the Baltimore Burn, 36-0. The Divas win a share of the Northern Division championship with the Detroit Demolition and will be seeded second behind Detroit in the upcoming NWFA playoffs.
The Divas (8-0) did their damage on the ground, rushing for five touchdowns in the game. Donna Wilkinson led the Divas with 98 yards on 13 carries and two touchdowns, while LaShawn Foust was closely behind with 95 rushing yards as well. Fullback Claudia Hogan bulled her way into the end zone for two rushing touchdowns against the Burn, and Rhonda Williams also added a rushing score to the Divas’ final tally.
The Divas defense was stellar as always, shutting out their fourth straight opponent and their seventh in eight games this year. The Burn (4-4) were unable to muster much offense all day, as the Divas shut down Baltimore’s star running back, Kenyetta Grigsby. Grigsby came into the game with nine rushing touchdowns and averaging over 100 rushing yards per contest, but the Divas defense held her to just 65 yards on 12 attempts.
The Divas defense also forced two turnovers, both recovered by defensive back Vickie Lucas. Lucas recovered a fumble and snared an interception against Baltimore, finishing the regular season with three fumble recoveries and three interceptions in eight games.
The Divas enter the playoffs with a bye and will host a conference semifinal game on July 9 against the winner of the Connecticut Crush and the Massachusetts Mutiny.
