Hartford, CT – The D.C. Divas defense pitched its third straight shutout and returned two interceptions for touchdowns, and the Divas triumphed over the Connecticut Crush, 40-0.
The Crush (1-3) played an inspirational game in their home opener, which they dedicated to the memory of Carolyn Bell. Bell, a former Crush running back, safety, and team captain, died this offseason when she was hit by a drunk driver. The Crush held a moment of silence for Bell before the game and wore a #33 patch on their jerseys in her honor. The team also retired Bell’s #33 jersey in a halftime ceremony.
The emotional tributes made for a challenging atmosphere for the visiting Divas (4-0), who ultimately controlled the contest with their running game. The Divas rushed for 278 yards, with Rachelle Pecovsky racking up 135 yards and three touchdowns on the ground. LaShawn Foust added a fourth rushing touchdown for the Divas, who led 14-0 after one quarter and 27-0 at halftime.
The Divas defense, on the other hand, held Connecticut to just 82 yards of offense for the game. The defense also picked off two passes from Crush quarterback Joanna Debicki and returned them both for touchdowns.
The Divas continue their road swing next Saturday when they face their rivals, the Baltimore Burn, in Baltimore.
