Landover, MD – All season long, the D.C. Divas have been one of the favorites to win the NWFA championship. By winning Saturday, the Divas’ road to a title will remain close to home.
The D.C. Divas finished their third straight undefeated regular season and ran their regular season record since 2003 to 31-1 with a 40-0 win over the visiting Connecticut Crush. The Divas will have home field advantage throughout the NWFA playoffs in their bid to make the national championship game in Pittsburgh, PA.
The Divas (8-0) amassed 481 total yards of offense against Connecticut. Offensive MVP Claudia Hogan recorded her first touchdown of the season, and Hogan and her backfield mates Rachelle Pecovsky and LaShawn Foust helped account for four touchdowns and 352 yards of rushing. Pecovsky became only the second back in Divas history to gain over a thousand yards during the regular season, finishing the regular season with 1,087 yards rushing. The Divas have outscored their opponents this season, 378-6.
Defensively, the Divas made NWFA history by shutting out the Crush (4-4). The Divas allowed only six points in eight regular season games this season and their seventh straight shutout set a women’s football record, breaking the previous mark of six set by the New York Sharks in 2003. Defensive MVP Trigger McNair had five solo tackles against Connecticut. The seven-year veteran of both the WPFL and IWFL led a defense that only allowed 35 yards of total offense to the Crush. Ivy Tillman and Drea Major helped lead an outstanding linebacker corps that thoroughly shut down the Connecticut offense.
With the win, the Divas secured home field advantage in the playoffs as the number one seed in the Northern Conference. The Divas will host the Chattanooga Locomotion on July 8 at the Prince George’s Sports Complex. Tickets for the conference semifinal match with the Locomotion will go on sale beginning Monday, June 19.
