Medway, MA – The D.C. Divas remained undefeated in their first season in the Independent Women’s Football League (IWFL) with a hard-fought 51-0 win on the road over the New England Intensity.
The Divas (7-0) were led by an impressive air attack that featured quarterback Allyson Hamlin, who tossed three touchdowns on six of 11 passing for 172 yards. Nikki Williams, the team’s all-time leading receiver, caught two scores, including a career-high 66-yard touchdown reception. Kathryn Hemlock, excelling in the defensive backfield this season, returned a punt 70 yards to the end zone.
Tara Kallal was the team’s offensive MVP, starting the scoring with a seven-yard touchdown run. On the ground, Rachelle Pecovsky starred with 163 yards on 14 carries, including a 53-yard score in the third quarter.
Meanwhile, the Intensity (3-4) were shut down by the stout Divas defense. Defensive MVP Trigger McNair led a unit that posted the Divas’ fifth shutout of the season and their 13th in the last 18 games. Linebacker “Poison” Ivy Tillman also stood out, recording six tackles and an interception.
“Defensively they challenged us a bit early on,” said Coach Ezra Cooper. “We were able to adjust and then shut them down for the most part. We are working very hard to finish out the season like a champion should.”
The Divas’ victory is their 18th straight over two seasons and gives them a record of 44 wins and just 4 losses beginning with the 2003 season. They will travel to Cape Fear next on June 30 to finish the regular season. The Divas are attempting to accomplish an unparalleled feat in 2007: back-to-back championships in two completely different leagues.
