Alison Fischer Q&A
Who was your childhood idol? Why?
During my swimming years, it was Mary T Meagher (Madame Butterfly)…she completely dominated the butterfly events. She was at her peak during the 1980 Olympics but couldn’t compete due to the US boycott. She endured another four years of training and came away with a few gold medals at the 1984 Olympics. As far as football was concerned, I was a big fan of Roger Staubach…I had a poster of him on my bedroom door. |
Who is your biggest supporter?
My parents. |
Who is your favorite NFL player? Why?
I have several. For defensive backs, I like watching Ed Reed, Bob Sanders, and Roy Williams, because I love the way they hit. I’m also a Darryl Green fan…he had a great attitude and work ethic, plus he played corner when he was in his forties, which gives me a bit of inspiration! I really enjoy watching Clay Matthews play…he’s always around the ball, and the guy never stops. And of course, I’m a big fan of Brian Mitchell, who was one of the greatest special teams players ever. |
What are your favorite movies?
Chocolat and Harry Potter |
What are your favorite TV shows?
Charmed, Trading Spaces, and Scrubs |
What is your favorite quote?
“Play every down like it’s your last.” |
How would you describe yourself in three words?
Loyal, type-A, seasoned. |
What is your sports background?
I participated in varsity swimming, volleyball, and track and field at Tennessee High School. I went on to Virginia Tech, where I was a four-year letter winner in swimming. I play women’s flag football for the Virginia Panthers, who were the #1-ranked competitive flag football team in the IWFFL in 2000. |
What was your biggest adjustment to playing women’s football?
The time commitment and rearranging my schedule to attend practices, games, and team functions. |
If you could play any other position, which one would you choose? Why?
Defensive line…a chance to frequently hit the quarterback and an opportunity to control the game in the trenches – that’s what’s up! I’d love to play a position in each phase of the game – offense, defense, and special teams – that way, I’d never have to come off the field! |
What is your most memorable Divas moment?
Our second matchup against the Philadelphia Liberty Belles in 2001. In our very first game ever, Philly blew us out, 40-0. But we grew up a lot during that season. When we played them the second time in 2001 – at home in the rain – we played them extremely close before losing, 14-7. Even though we lost, that’s when I knew we’d soon be a force to be reckoned with. Philly went on to win the NWFA national championship that year. |
Why do you play women’s tackle football?
My goal is not only to play women’s football but for my team to be the best in the league. |
