Jamila Bey Q&A
Who is your biggest supporter?
My husband and my son inspire me to do whatever I am compelled to try. Without them, I’d be nowhere! |
If you could have a conversation with anyone, dead or alive, who would you choose? Why?
Thomas Jefferson…I’d love to talk to him about the role of government in American life today. I really want to know what he’d say about the current two-party system, the Patriot Act, and the Second Amendment. |
Who is your female sports idol?
Serena Williams is a force of nature, and she’s everything a woman should be. |
What are your favorite hobbies or special interests?
I love to argue. I love to read and argue about what I’ve read. The world needs more challenge and more understanding. That only happens when we confront our own ideas and see how they stack up against those of others. One will go crazy in an echo chamber. |
What is your favorite movie?
I love Silence of the Lambs and will binge watch it for hours on end. Hannibal Lechter’s mad brilliance is unparalleled, and Sir Anthony Hopkins is the best actor of his day. |
What is your favorite TV show?
This question presumes I have time to watch TV! But since I appear on For Her Man, Criminals At Work, and For My Woman, it would be those. |
What is your favorite travel location?
New Orleans is my favorite place in the world. Paris is a close second, but there’s nothing as amazing as rolling down the Mississippi on a steamboat, getting off to have beignets, and then dancing to live music while drinking a hurricane. |
What is your favorite food?
I love all Asian foods, but pepperoni pizza is my longest-lasting gastronomic pleasure. |
What is your favorite book?
Just one?!? I will remind us that the entirety of George Orwell is necessary to read today. But…I’m partial to The Good Earth, by Pearl S. Buck. |
Who is your favorite musician or group?
My favorite musician is Oscar Peterson, my favorite group is Moke (they don’t exist anymore), but Galactic is the perfect blend of New Orleans jazz, funk, rock, and joy! |
What is your favorite quote?
“Better to reign in hell than serve in heaven.” |
How would you describe yourself in three words?
Hilarious, intelligent, controversial. |
What are your lifetime aspirations?
I want to make the world a better place. I want to make people think. I also want to make people laugh and recognize the humanity within one another. |
What was the first sport you ever played?
Soccer! I like using my awesome legs. |
How did you hear about women’s football?
I wrote a Washington Post article about working out in a CrossFit gym. (I’m the first person to write the words “Crossfit” and “kettlebells” in that publication.) Rich Daniel reached out to me and asked me to try out. I did, and I’m happy I did! |
Why do you want to play women’s football?
This is my own personal challenge. I know I can do this. The training is difficult. The commitment is hard. The work is unending. But the Divas will help me to achieve greatness and championship. |
What does it mean to you to be a D.C. Diva?
Being part of something larger than myself and being a member of a team. |
