Stephanie Jackson Q&A

Who was your childhood idol? Why?
My mother…I saw her work ethic and wanted to be just like her. In sports, I looked up to Deion Sanders, because he never limited himself and had great confidence, and Ken Griffey, Jr., because he was just damn good!
Who is your biggest supporter?
My younger brother and my grandfather.
If you could have a conversation with anyone, dead or alive, who would you choose? Why?
I believe that the legends always leave behind the important things we need to know about their lives. I could pick up a book and have a conversation with any legend who is no longer here…except my grandmother. She recently passed and she had been teaching me how to live all of my life. I would, however, like to thank her and let her know that her teachings did not fall on deaf ears. She took 28 years out of her life to pour into mine, so I’m sure she wouldn’t mind taking a two-minute break from heaven to chat a bit.
Who is your female sports idol?
I’m from Baton Rouge, so growing up, I was a huge Simone Augustus fan! She is still a legend in the city. As a kid, I loved watching Mia Hamm and Nancy Kerrigan. They were all champions, and that’s what I wanted to be!
Who is your favorite NFL player? Why?
Larry Fitzgerald and Drew Brees…I watched Fitz play in college, and the way he approached and continues to approach the game is absolutely worth mimicking! He is very meticulous when it comes to the receiver position and runs routes as close to perfectly as I’ve seen. And Drew has such a heart for the city of New Orleans, which is where I was born. After Katrina, he poured into the city both on and off the field, giving everyone in NOLA, Louisiana, and Mississippi something to believe in. He’s a fighter who never quits, and I love that about him! He’s also someone who understands his own influence on others and uses that influence to do a lot of good.
What are your favorite hobbies or special interests?
I’ve been collecting old and foreign coins since I was a kid. My new focus is on the “wheat penny”…since my grandmother is no longer here, I have to pick up her slack! I also love hiking and mountain/rock climbing. I will play any sport and have been known to make up my own sports on occasion.
What is your favorite movie?
The Lion King…there is so much to learn from that movie, and I am still applying its life lessons.
What is your favorite TV show?
I don’t get to watch much television, but my two favorite shows of all time are I Love Lucy and Friends.
What is your favorite travel location?
Costa Rica!
What is your favorite food?
Dish: Jambalaya; Cuisine: Thai food.
What is your favorite book?
To Kill A Mockingbird.
Who is your favorite musician or group?
Drake!
What is your favorite quote?
“Dream like you will live forever. Live like you will die today.” – James Dean
How would you describe yourself in three words?
Beast mode always.
What are your lifetime aspirations?
To give everything I have and to see all of my dreams manifested.
What was the first sport you ever played?
Football.
What is your favorite sports memory?
My senior year in high school, my basketball team was down by 24 points going into the fourth quarter. My coach called up a full-court press for the rest of the game and I ended up getting four steals and scoring 18 points in the fourth quarter. We lost by two points, but I earned my teammates’ trust that day.
How did you hear about women’s football?
I researched it on Google one evening.
Why do you want to play women’s football?
I believe this is my calling, so it’s not a matter of me wanting to play (although I do!) It’s more about me needing to play as a part of me giving to the world. Football is one of my platforms in life.
What does it mean to you to be a D.C. Diva?
I’m not sure yet, but I do know that the players I’ve had the chance to meet and speak with all approach the game humbly and respectfully. That, more than anything else, has stuck with me. I’ve met quite a few players from across the nation and the Divas players stand out. I have never been part of a team with such a culture of excellence and reverence for the game. I am looking forward to adding to that and understanding exactly what it means to be a D.C. Diva.
